Onno Zoeter | Head of Booking AI Research at Booking.com
Title: Real-world impact with AI and the acceleration research can bring
Abstract: AI is rightfully getting a lot of attention at the moment. Recent breakthroughs changed the landscape considerably. Computers can generate photo realistic images, hold dialogues over a wide range topics, can drive cars autonomously in many settings, etc. What used to be fields of academic study now have become potential fields of business advances and business disruptions.
Drawing on 25 years of experience in the field and 10 years of experience leading Machine Learning and AI research at Booking.com, Dr. Onno Zoeter will go over several important examples of real-world impact and lessons learned. A/B tests at Booking.com allow ML scientists to get frequent and reliable feedback about what works and what does not. In such an environment what do they learn? What meta lessons can be learned about how to organise for success? And what role does (fundamental) research play in this phase of transition?
Bart Veldhuis | Founder of the Cloud Architect Alliance & Consulting Partner at Rapid Circle Advisory
Title: GenAI: ”just a Power Hungry Autocomplete function that ate the Internet” or a “potential revolutionary innovation?
Abstract: GenAI developers are in a relentless race toward General Artificial Intelligence, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. From the outside, it looks like a revolution in the making. Yet, inside organizations, the reality is far less groundbreaking—most struggle to move beyond basic productivity boosts. If we truly want disruption, we need to take GenAI out of the realm of “it works in my favourite text editor” and start embedding it into core business processes. This requires a way of thinking that allows us to identify potential value cases without exactly understanding the end-state of the solution.
This session explores the business drivers of GenAI and the strategies companies are using to adopt it safely and effectively. If you lived through the Cloud Hype Cycle, some of this may feel eerily familiar. The question is: can we apply those hard-earned lessons to accelerate the innovation and adoption of GenAI?
Aplonia Stelloo | Solution Engineer at Snowflake
Title: From Data to Decisions: Enabling self-serve analytics with LLMs in Snowflake.
Abstract: Snowflake will demonstrate how easy it is to put the power of an LLM directly on top of your data with Cortex AI. Enabling anyone in the business to leverage these powerful LLMs to extract insights, generate reports and enable self-serve analytics simply by asking questions in natural language. No pipelines, no complexity, just answers.
John Ashley Burgoyne | Assistant Professor in Computational Musicology at University of Amsterdam
Title: How much do we really understand about making music with AI?
Abstract: Generative AI for music seems to be both one of the biggest threats to artistic careers today and one of the most exciting new tools for unlocking artistic potential. How different are today’s models, really, from what came before them? Do we understand enough about how they work to be able to know how much they are leveraging specific songs in their training sets? How much artistic control can we exercise over their outputs?
This talk will review of some of the earliest history of computer-generated music, explain some key strengths and weaknesses of today’s music-generating networks, and outline artist-friendly strategies for aligning training examples with the music that models produce.
Felienne Hermans | Professor of Computer Science Education at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
Title: In Praise of Messy Life
Abstract: In her thought provoking keynote and recent NRC essay, professor and coding educator Felienne Hermans argues for embracing the complexity of learning in an age of artificial intelligence. While AI tools like ChatGPT are reshaping education, she warns against rushing to integrate them without asking deeper questions.
Hermans challenges the idea that it’s solely up to teachers to help students navigate these tools, especially when they weren’t invited to the table in the first place. Instead, she advocates for strengthening students' critical thinking and factual knowledge, not by outsourcing creativity to machines, but by teaching them to sit with discomfort, think deeply, and develop their own ideas.
Because sometimes, the mess is the learning.
